Whole House Water Filter

The whole house water filter is in the laundry room. It is a tube mounted on a pipe near the window, you can't miss it. Its purpose is to filter sediment from the water. When it gets clogged, water pressure in the house goes down or stops altogether.

The filters are white tubes. There should be some laying around the filter or in the garage storage room. You can also buy them at Herrington's or Lowe's. It's a pretty standard filter - it measures 2.5“ diameter by 10” long. Here is an example. Try to get a 5 micron filter (most of them are)

You will need

  • A bucket large enough to hold the water in the filter housing. There are several floating around the basement
  • The filter wrench which is a plastic thingy which goes around the filter housing and has slots which lock into the tabs in the housing. It should be near the filter.
  • A new, unwrapped filter

Step by Step

  1. Turn off the main water valve to the house. It's a valve on the pipe between the filter and the blue tank which turns 1/4 turn. Turn it to horizontal
  2. Go into the bathroom and turn on the cold water in the sink or shower until it stops. Turn off the faucet.
  3. At the top of the filter housing is a handle. It only turns one way. Turn it fully (180 degrees) until it presses down on a little button on the left side of the handle cutout. You may hear a little air escape.
  4. Loosen the housing with the wrench (pull left) then unscrew it completely by hand. Be careful, it will be full of water
  5. Dump the water and dirty filter into the bucket
  6. Place the new filter into the housing, making sure the hole in the filter goes over the nub at the bottom of the housing
  7. Put the filter housing back on the head, making sure the filter is centered in the head. Hand tighten the housing then gently tighten a little bit more with the wrench. Do not overtighten.
  8. Turn the handle on the top of the housing back to its original position
  9. Slowly turn the main water valve back on about halfway. The filter housing should fill with water. Once full, open the main valve all the way
  10. Go into the bathroom and turn on the cold water. Air should spurt out until the water comes back on. This may happen in other places in the house as well
