Theory of Operation

Heat Pump

Heat is a type of energy. Cold is the absence of heat. Air conditioners are “heat pumps” - they pump heat energy from inside the house to outside the house, which results in the house getting colder.

Heat is pumped using refrigerant, which is a special fluid which absorbs heat when gaseous and under normal pressure, and releases it when put under pressure which turns it into a liquid.

Whole House Water Filter

The whole house water filter is in the laundry room. It is a tube mounted on a pipe near the window, you can't miss it. Its purpose is to filter sediment from the water. When it gets clogged, water pressure in the house goes down or stops altogether.

The ice maker is fed from a copper tube which comes up from the floor. The tube goes below the floor to a cold water pipe, where it taps into water using a “saddle valve”. The valve also has a handle to turn the water on and off.

To Backwash the Pool

The pool filter filters the water from the pool. The water is pulled from the pool via the two skimmers and the drain on the floor of the deep end, is filtered/heated, and returns through the return jets. The crud that gets filtered will clog the filter and backwashing the filter cleans it.

Raw sewage is mostly water.

The sewage flows down the drain pipes into a septic tank. The tank is pretty large and is buried between the house and the forest. There is a concrete deck on the top.

In the septic tank, the solids in the sewage naturally settle to the bottom, this is the sludge. The dirty water, called effluent, floats at the top. The effluent, which is actually full of nutrients, is drained off into a

Theory of Operation

Our water comes from a well. The well is in the yard between the driveway and the lake.

There is a pump which pumps water from the well into the house. The water comes in at the laundry room. You'll see the pump switch on the wall underneath the window.
