- Turn off circuit breaker
  - shut off cold water entering the tank using shutoff valve
  - connect hose to spout at bottom and run hose outside
  - turn a hot water faucet on somewhere in the house. This lets air into the tank
  - use screwdriver to open valve at hose connection 
  - let drain. Could take awhile
  - to remove sediment turn cold water on for 20 seconds then off. Let drain. Repeat 2-3 times
  - close valve with screwdriver and disconnect hose 
  - slowly turn cold water back on. Make sure hot water faucet is still open
  - let fill then turn breaker back on
